Features:

  • Flip-down detachable faceplate
  • MP3 Playback
    • Plays MP3 CD-R's

  • ATRAC3plus playback/CONNECT Ready
    • The next generation of Sony's proprietary audio compression technology, ATRAC3plus™ achieves smaller files size in conjunction with superior sound quality. By analyzing audio segments greater in length, improving precision, and utilizing newly developed algorithms, bit allocation is optimized. This results in compression schemes 1/20th the size of the original sound source, with no noticeable deterioration of sound quality.
  • BBE MP
    • BBE® MP is short for Minimized Polynomial Non-Linear Saturation, and is a type of BBE specifically designed for compressed sound formats, such as MP3, WMA, and of course, ATRAC3plus™. BBE MP restores and enhances harmonic content that is typically lost or reduced during the compression process, bringing back the warmth, detail, and subtle nuances in the original uncompressed recording. Through additional oversampling, BBE MP extends the high frequency response of traditional CD audio to the level of Super CD or DVD audio, up to 48kHz.
  • Front preamp output
  • Rear/Sub selectable preout w/LPF
    • A powerful combination of features that vastly improve both sound quality and system expandability.

A preamp output provides a clean avenue with which to add amplification. Higher power translates to cleaner sound and more output. With amplifiers, it's best to start with the cleanest audio signal available, and a preamp output provides just that.

A subwoofer preamp output provides a clean upgrade path for a subwoofer amp. With its own input, the subwoofer audio level is easily controlled. And Sony includes a separate level control for this right in the head unit. Perfect balance can be realized between the subwoofer level and the rest of the frequency spectrum, all from the comfort of the drivers seat.

      CD/MD changer control

  • An upgrade path allowing functional integration between a UniLink CD or MD changer and a CD/MD control head unit. A head unit featuring CD/MD changer control has the capacity to control the functions of a CD or MD changer using the front panel controls. The two components communicate with each other through UniLink, Sony's proprietary remote component control system architecture. The changer is typically mounted in the vehicles trunk or other remote location in the vehicle, and is connected to the CD/MD controller with a UniLink cable. The changer keeps the head unit updated with all related system status, which also allows pertenant information to be displayed on the front panel of the head unit.

Up to 7 CD, MD, and/or other UniLink components can be wired into the stereo system, all of which communicate with each other. The use of multiple changers require the addition of an XA-C30, a UniLink multi-changer adapter. Other components, such as the XA-300 auxiliary input adapter, or the RM-XM10B remote control panel, come equipped with a UniLink pass-thru, so no additional adapters are required if these are added to an existing system.
  • CD Text
    • Now your player can tell you the name of each song on a CD!

CD TEXT™ information, album title, artist name and track titles, is included on many recent releases. And Sony CD TEXT™ models display this information right on the front panel. And unlike other manufacturer's head units, the CD TEXT™ information can be displayed even when there is no changer connected to the system. If a changer is part of the system and it has CD TEXT™ capability, Memo List can be used to view the names of the discs in the changer and to select one for playback.
  • XM Ready
    • An upgrade path allowing functional integration between an XM Satellite tuner and a CD/MD control head unit. An XM Ready head unit has the capacity to control all the functions of an XM tuner, and display a variety of XM Satellite radio station information that can include the currently playing song title, artist, station identification number, station name, and a host of other data.
Upgrading to add XM Satellite radio capability includes the purchase of an XM tuner, an XM antenna, and a subscription.
  • DSO
    • If a sound comes from our left, as an example, several obvious and not so obvious conditions occur. The sound, of course, reaches our left ear first, about a millisecond before it reaches our right ear, depending on the width of our head. It is also a little louder in our left ear than in our right. Another very important condition occurs. Because our head partially blocks the sound waves themselves, the frequency response of the sound is different as it reaches our left ear, compared to as it reaches our right.

Sony engineers have taken advantage of some of these conditions and have developed DSO. Proprietary circuitry induces subtle phase shift in the preamp output, different in each output channel, to simulate a sound source that is higher in origin. Further, the frequency response in a section of the sound is altered, to further enhance the perception that the sound is originating from a physically higher source. These two factors, combine to seemingly raise the sound stage, and spread it wider across the dash, even if the speakers are mounted low in the doors.

  • EQ3
    • Seven different presets offer a wide variety of solutions to different sound reproduction challenges found in the automotive environment, and each preset can be fine tuned for optimal performance in every application and installation. Each preset focuses on different areas of the audio spectrum, and the center equalization frequencies change according to the specific needs of the individual music types identified by the preset name.
  • 52W x 4 high power
    • Xplod Power - Just how much power is enough? As much as possible!

So, many of the Xplod head units include a newly-designed power IC, which can produce 52 watts of power into each of four speakers. Up to 23.2 watts RMS continuous power is available for cleaner sound, and higher output.
      • A proprietary Sony technology used in CD player chassis platform design improving sound quality and durability. Drive-S includes improvements in the CD transport mechanism, audio stages, 12-volt power supply, and the tuner section. The CD mechanism features a smaller and lighter optical pick-up, improving reaction and recovery time. It increases resistance to in-car vibration through an all-new suspension system, with improved dampers and weight distribution. And the new drive motor offers increased durability while consuming less power than previous versions.

A new S-MOSFET power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, lower distortion, and a better signal-to-noise ratio, while running cooler and drawing less current. Newly designed aluminum audio capacitors are used in the D/A converter circuitry and digital signal processing paths, improving the audio quality over that of standard SMDs (surface mounted devices).

      • A much simpler approach to D/A conversion than multi-bit DAC's is the 1-bit or "pulse" type DAC.

The obvious benefit is the elimination of the "zero cross error" that plagues multi-bit designs. Of course, there's a down side, too. 1-bit DACs require very fast clock speeds, which can be difficult to achieve. The result is a DAC that avoids both the zero cross error of multi-bit designs, and the noise problems of other 1-bit DACs.
      • Most dashboards found in today's vehicles are perpendicular to the floor - they form a relatively flat and level surface on which to mount a CD receiver. As such, most CD receivers are manufactured with this specification in mind.

There are cases however, in which the mounting surface sits at an angle, and the average CD receiver may not perform optimally in this configuration. Most Sony CD receivers feature a 45 degree maximum mounting angle, allowing them to be used in virtually any custom or unusual installation, without any degradation in performance.
      • In some cases, a CD-R or CD-RW with dirt, scratches or other defects may not play back properly. Please read and follow all directions for the CD-R/RW media and the CD-R/RW recorder. If the CD-R is not finalized at the completion of the recording session, the CD-R may not play back properly.
      • Featuring Adaptive Reception characteristics, the SSIR-EXA circuitry can actually adjust the tuner's bandwidth, providing optimal performance in both congested and sparsely populated FM areas.

X-Tal Lock Quartz Tuning uses a quartz crystal (X-Tal) which vibrates (oscillates) at its natural resonant frequency and stays exactly at one frequency without wavering. Then, all other radio frequencies are mathematically calculated (synthesized), using the quartz frequency as a reference. The result is extremely accurate frequency selection.

The Phase Locked Loop (PLL) sends the synthesized frequency through a comparator circuit, using the quartz crystal's oscillation as a reference. This insures the frequency and its phase are correct, resulting in stable, drift-free reception.

      • A Custom File feature providing the means with which to program an 8 charactor name for a radio frequency. The Station Memo memory bank features a capacity of up to 62 entries, more than enough slots for most radio listeners. And the 8 charactor names are displayed during both normal playback, and when the Memo List function is used, so a list of preset stations can be viewed by name, as opposed to frequency.
